⚠️ Digital Censorship: Meta's Policy Changes Signal Broader Threats to Healthcare Access and endanger LGBTQ+ users
Meta's content policy changes in January 2025 are part of a broader digital censorship trend affecting marginalized communities and access to vital sexual health information.
Reliabl Founder Annie Brown's posted a warning on digital censorship this week, reminding us this is a battle we have been waging for quite some time.
The new content policies announced in January 2025 eliminate fact-checking and permit anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric and discrimination, creating a hostile environment that threatens LGBTQ+ users' safety and representation across Meta's platforms despite available protective measures.
Government actions have compounded these issues.
Trump's federal health website scrubbed the term 'abortion', and as many discovered this week the site the Biden administration launched after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, ReproductiveRights.gov, is now a broken link.
In response, organizations like the Human Rights Campaign are providing online safety guidance for LGBTQ+ Communities, while companies like the Skimm are working to preserve and restore access to critical reproductive health resources.
